5 Simple Chair Exercises For Over 50s

Turning 50, 60, or 70 doesn’t mean you have to feel unsteady on your feet.

After 50, we lose a little muscle and balance every year if we don’t use it. The good news? You can get it back at home with just a sturdy chair and less than 15 minutes a day. No gym, no equipment.

Here are 5 simple moves I teach in my 6-week plan that help you feel stronger and steadier:

1. Chair Sit-to-Stand
Sit on the edge of a chair, feet flat. Lean forward slightly and stand up slowly, then sit back down with control. This builds leg strength for stairs and getting up from the sofa.

2. Seated Marching
Sit tall in your chair. Lift one knee up, then the other, like marching. Hold the chair arms if you need to. This helps hip strength and coordination.
March for 30 seconds.

3. Heel and Toe Raises (Holding Chair)
Stand behind your chair, holding the back for balance. Rise up on your toes, hold 2 seconds, lower down. Then lift your toes up. This strengthens ankles and helps prevent falls.
Do 10 of each.

4. Seated Shoulder Rolls
Sit tall, roll your shoulders forward 5 times, then backward 5 times. This eases stiffness from sitting and improves posture so you breathe easier.

5. Standing Balance Hold
Stand behind your chair, hold with one hand. Lift one foot just 2 inches off the floor, hold for 10 seconds. Switch feet. Over time, try with just fingertips on the chair.

How to start safely:

Do these 3 days a week. Use a sturdy, non-wheeled chair on a non-slip rug. Wear flat, closed shoes. Stop if you feel dizzy.

You don’t need to do all 5 on day one. Pick 2, do them for 10 minutes, and add one more next week. Consistency beats intensity after 50.

I put all 5 of these into a simple, photo-by-photo 6-week plan with progress tracking so you know exactly what to do each day.
